Wild, Wild Life and the Dream Commute

It’s been a bit hectic lately but never in a bad way. Three weeks, 6-city DJ tour, two weddings, countless friends old and new, delicious local meals from all over, discovering beaches and parks throughout the country and back to SF to my new job with Visual Insight. Life is grand. The “Wild, Wild Life,” that is.

This was, of course, my favorite Talking Heads song and video when I was a kid and the only VHS I ever wanted to watch was Storytelling Giant.

While I compile my thoughts on the last month of travels and begin to share with everyone, enjoy this series of events I experienced commuting to my work meeting in Bodega Bay, Sonoma County yesterday. In 2006 when I had first graduated college I was commuting daily from North Beach to Rockville, MD to work in biotech which was killing not only my carbon footprint but also morale. This is the opposite of that drive.

A Day in the Life: 5 Lessons Learned Sailing the San Francisco Bay

In early June I had the opportunity to join a crew for a day out on the San Francisco Bay through the world-renowned OCSC Sailing School. The school, located across the bridge in Berkeley, has been in operation for over 30 years and is notoriously located in a straight wind line from the Pacific Ocean by way of the Golden Gate Bridge, but far enough that it is typically spared from Karl the Fog.

We left the marina in Berkeley, headed to the north side of Alcatraz, then cruised past Tiburon to the north side of Angel Island where we stopped for a tasty picnic. After a bite and a few brews from the Oyster Bar and Cantina we hopped back on the boat and headed toward the Golden Gate Bridge. We dipped under the bridge to the ocean for a few minutes and then returned to the bay, along the SF waterfront, past Treasure Island and finished up at the marina where it all started.

It was an unforgettable adventure – perfect activity to clear my head, do some physical work and experience the bay in a natural, adrenaline-fueled state. An opportunity like this doesn’t come along every day and I strongly advise that given the chance to sail in the San Francisco Bay, you clear your schedule and prepare for an wild ride.

These are my top 5 tips to make the most of the experience.

Garlic Cures All

…except garlic breath. The stinking rose has been used in medicine for thousands of years and it’s no surprise that something so strong and smelly has the power to revive you biologically. I use it as a cure for whatever ails but for hangovers it’s especially key.

The great thing about living in California is that it’s also grown nearby – the 2012 Gilroy Garlic Festival is this weekend about a 1.5 hour drive from SF.

I make super easy roasted garlic a few times a week and it’s used in many of my recipes as well as a solo appetizer.

Faves and Finds: Hapa Ramen

Fried chicken ramen

The ideal local food spot isn’t just conveniently located with delicious eats but also shows a sense of community – friendly staff who honestly enjoy what they do and provide. I’m going to feature these old favorites as well as new special jems I discover while traveling, starting with my Thursday tradition Hapa Ramen. Nearly every week I pay a visit to the crew at Hapa Ramen, who set up shop outside the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays and Thursdays, to get a bowl of some of the best comfort food around.

A Day in the Life

Spent today at the Bay View Boat Club overlooking AT&T Park for a Cornell alum (no Andy Bernard) SF Giants tailgate BBQ. The setting was picturesque, food was tasty and we met a lot of great people while taking it all in.

We didn’t have tickets and no one seemed to have extras – it was young pitcher Madison Bumgarner bobblehead day – so instead visited the infamous McCovey Cove Splash Zone for a taste of the game.

Check out more pics below.
